ARTIST/DJ
PHOTAY
Photay is the solo musical endeavor of Evan Shornstein, the multi-instrumentalist, composer, producer and remixer hailing from the evergreen valley of Woodstock, NY, and who since mid-way through this year now calls Los Angeles home.
His story, not to mention his output, can only be described as prodigious. Introduced to Aphex Twin at 9 years old, exploring turntablism by 12 and beyond that, composition. Years later, after an eye-opening trip to Guinea, West Africa, Photay was born.
Ten years on from his debut, Photay now operates in his own fluid multi-directional musical space, whether the quasi-IDM and electronic almost-pop of his solo output, diasporic folkways collaborations with MsafiriZawose, Penya as WEMA, or improvised organic and experimental music sessions alongside new age giants Laraaji and Carlos Niño. His remixes, especially, reveal this polyrhythm-versed drummer’s enduring connection to the dance floor and to movement; physical, emotional, and spiritual.
We’ve been connecting with Evan since 2022 about doing something in Ojai, and we couldn’t be happier about how it’s finally fallen into place in the form of an exclusive 3-hour hybrid live / dj set. He joins us touring his forthcoming Photay album ‘Windswept’, early in a string of dates that include SF MOMA and Brooklyn’s Public Records. One to not miss for sure!

INSPIRATION
Dance Ground takes cues from spiritually-grounded NYC party The Loft, freeform movement practices & improvisational performance, and seeks to answer “the growing imperative to revive communal rituals of wonder that resound with the pulse of the present” (Joshua Schrei).
